What types of positions do you recruit for and where?
We recruit for interns across our asset footprint. The business needs drive the internships from different areas. A few examples of schools where we actively recruit are the University of Oklahoma, Langston University and Bismarck State College.
Tell us about working/living in the region where you recruit.
Why do you think people should join the ONEOK team?
I work in Tulsa at ONEOK’s corporate headquarters. Tulsa is a great, larger metropolitan city with a small-town feel. The majority of our hiring, however, is in our field locations. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to areas where we’re recruiting, and anywhere within ONEOK is a good place to be.
It’s a strong, financially viable company that cares about the long-term gain, not just the short term. Also, the growth opportunities are wonderful, and it’s not just promotions. It’s the training offered on topics like safety from our Environmental, Safety and Health team and unconscious bias through our Diversity and Inclusion team. ONEOK invests in its employees.
What do you like about working at ONEOK?
I sincerely enjoy working with people from throughout the company. I like to say, “We win and lose as a team,” and that’s the goal I keep working toward with those I work with most often.
What surprised you most about ONEOK when you came to work here?
Our senior leaders truly care. The employees are not just a number here. Our executives definitely care about increasing value to our shareholders, but they never lose sight of the employees.
What advice would you offer to job seekers?
Prepare and research the company. You don’t have to be an expert in what ONEOK does, but a little research goes a long way in an interview. We conduct behavioral-based interviews at ONEOK and typically are looking for specific examples when we ask a question. Interviews sometimes are a candidate’s first and last impression rolled into a few hours with the interviewers. Make the most of that time with a positive and professional interaction
When you’re reviewing applications or interviewing, what makes a candidate stand out for you?
As cliché as it might sound, it’s professionalism. Were there typos on the application? Were they dressed appropriately for an interview? Were their answers articulated well?
