About Pipeline Safety

Today, a network of more than 2 million miles of natural gas and natural gas liquids pipelines exists in the United States. These pipelines quietly, reliably and efficiently deliver natural gas and natural gas liquids throughout the country for domestic, commercial and industrial use. Pipelines are among the safest methods of transporting energy. ONEOK and ONEOK Partners operate an extensive underground natural gas and natural gas liquids pipeline system, compressor stations and a variety of other facilities.

Safety is our top priority
A pipeline right of way is the area of land containing the pipeline. A right-of-way agreement between our company and a property owner is called an easement. Easements provide us with permanent, limited access to the land to enable us to construct, operate, test, inspect, maintain and protect our pipeline. The width of our right of way varies in the distance from each side of the center of the pipeline.

Pipeline rights of way must be kept free from structures and other obstructions. If a pipeline crosses your property, please do not plant, place or build anything on or near the right of way without first having our personnel mark the pipeline, stake the easement and explain the company’s construction guidelines to you. Whether or not you’ve notified the company in advance, if you dig, hit or contact the pipeline in any way, inform us immediately. The locations of pipelines should be considered in land-use plans and zoning. Pipeline operators would like to work with you when developing site plans for residential or commercial developments.

Pipeline Integrity Programs
Managing and maintaining the integrity of our pipeline systems is a priority. The purpose of this program is to provide safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation of natural gas and natural gas liquids for our customers without adverse effects on the public, our customers, our employees or the environment.

Incident-free operation is our goal.

Our program provides comprehensive management of threats to integrity in high consequence areas. This is done by ensuring that integrity risks associated with the pipeline are identified, assessed and managed to a level as low as reasonably practical. Although this program is used to manage the integrity of all the pipeline systems the company operates, it is specifically intended to apply only to segments of pipelines in high consequence areas subject to the requirements of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 192, Subpart O, of the federal regulations.
