Texas Employee Helps Out Following Accident on Highway

Vaughn Henson, intermediate measurement technician in Silver Creek, Texas, was among bystanders who assisted in a five-vehicle wreck.

When Vaughn Henson witnessed a multi-vehicle accident near Fort Worth, Texas, he didn’t hesitate to act.  

His calm response and quick thinking helped free passengers and support first responders. Henson says the ability to stay composed came from the safety training and awareness he has gained during his time at ONEOK. 

“I kept myself safe by staying calm and not panicking and remembering all the things I have learned since my time with both ONEOK and EnLink,” said Henson, intermediate measurement technician in Silver Creek, Texas. 

The incident began when Henson saw five vehicles collide at an intersection. Moments later, a car slid upside down an embankment and stopped approximately 30 feet from him. While others called 911, Henson put on his hazard lights and walked over to help.

Working with another bystander, he helped open a jammed door so two passengers could exit safely. Later, as he drove away, he noticed more people struggling to assist someone trapped in a smoking truck. 

“I saw people run to one truck, and I could see that they were trying to get someone out,” Henson said. “So, I pulled over again and grabbed my gloves and a pry bar and ran to see what I could do.” 

For Henson, helping others in emergencies is personal. Years ago, strangers gave CPR to his grandmother after a car accident. 

“They did everything they could to help her, and I never got the chance to thank them because I met the ambulance at the emergency room that day,” Henson recalled. “Because of that, I try to help whenever I can.” 

Henson’s story is a powerful reminder that the safety principles we practice at work – staying calm, assessing hazards and using the right tools – can make a difference anywhere.
